A Study of Social Activities and Ego Integrity of the Aged
Kim Jung-Soon

Abstract
he purposes of this study were :
1) to measure the degree of social activities and ego integrity of the aged.
2) to explore the factors affecting the degree of ego integrity of the aged.
3) to explore the factors affecting the degree of social activities of the aged.
4) to examine the relationship between social activities and ego integrity.
5) to develop an instrument that can be used for measuring and analyzing degree of social activities and ego integrity of the aged.
Date for the study were collected by using interviewing method of 200 elderly, living in Busan, Korea.
The instrument used for this study were the social activity scale and the ego integrity scale developed by researcher based on the results of previous research.
All instruments were found to have reasonable validity and reliability.
The collected data were analyzed using spss program.
Examination of the differences in degree of ego integrity and social activities as related to personal
Assistant Professor, Dae Dong Junior Nursing Collegecharacteristics was done using analysis of variance. For the examination of the variables influencing social activities and ego integrity, pearson correlation coefficients, multiple regression analysis, stepwise multiple regression were used.
The reliability of the instruments was tested by cronbach¢¥s alpha.
For the examination of the component factors of the instrument for ego integrity, a factor analysis method was used.
The results are summarized as follows :
1) The reliability of the instrument for social activities range from 0.76 to 0.97 (Cronbach¢¥s alpha).
2) The reliability of the instrument for ego integrity was 0.93(Cronbach¢¥s alpha), the results of analysis of the 31 items making up the instrument were cl2 ssified into 6 factors.
3) The mean score of axial activities of the aged was 100.83. The mean score of ego integrity of the aged was 100.70.
4) The factors related to the old people¢¥s degree of ego integrity were identified as degree of social activity, economic status, health status, degree of education and marital status.
5) The factors influencing the degree of ego integrity independently when other variables were controlled were degree of social activities, health status and economic status.
6) The most important variable affecting old people¢¥s ego integrity was their degree of social activities which accounted for 42.55 % of the total variance in the stepwise multiple regression analysis.
7) The factors related to the old people¢¥s degree of social activities were identified as economic status, marital status, degree of education, religion, health status and age.
8) The factors influencing the degree of social activities independently when other variables were controlled were economic status, marital status and age.
9) The most important variable affecting old people¢¥s social activities was their economic status which accounted for 16.09 % of the total variance in the stepwise multiple regress-3n analysis.
